A
major part of Journalistic skills is nothing but Communication
. The Journalist gathers information (listening) and conveys
to the audience in a more digestible and understandable format.
Television does the job even better as the Reporter
speaks to the audience, even as he tries to show the events
with the help of visuals. The Reporter has to communicate
to sources , research people, interviewers, Editors, Cameramen
and many more people.
Therefore it helps to improve ones communication
skills. There are ways of doing this and books on the subject
always help.
Dale Carnegie's "How to make friends and
influence people" is a must read.
Below I have just put down a few
practical points that helped me :
-
Learn
to listen : A cliche but
an important art for a Journalist.
Most journalist go with a pre- concieved notion on a story
based on preliminary research - However when on location,
be open to ideas and try to be as objective as possible.
-
Important
Points - Note Down important points
Visuals and ideas and facts.
-
Spot
the good speaker - During research
itself know who you could interview Good speakers make
good TV.
-
Go
the Extra mile - Listening well could
mean getting new insight. You could research a lead again.
-
Keep
up the relations - Sources and
relationship with good interviewers might be needed again
and again. It helps to have a good rapport with
them. But that does not mean that they should be handled
with kid glove if they are controversial.
At the end of the topic I would
like to say that you have the material to be a good Journalist
because you have been listening. Communicate
back to me on your views about the site.
