This
sort of interview goes as a full package in a News or Current
Affairs programme. Such interviews aim to get out
the personality of the interviewee (Revealing Interviews)
or grill him on a particular subject (Cornering Interviews).
Before going any further on these sort of interviews,
I would like to remind that all fundamentals mentioned earlier
in the interview segment hold for
this type of interview as well.
Revealing
Interviews:
The
aim of such interviews is to get the personality behind an
individual. Generally, this individual is a celebrity.
A filmstar, a musician, a Director, a Sportsman and his family
etc. Here one should use
Prompting questions explained earlier to get the
best results. However, Probing
questions can also be asked to such an individual if there
are areas where the interviewee is reluctant to answer.
Cornering
Interviews:
Commonly
known as grilling to be resorted in case you wish to
get something out of a reluctant interviewer trying to hide
some facts. Generally an interview with a Political
leader or a person involved in a Controversy works out to
be this kind. Mostly Probing Questions are used
in this sort of interview. Anticipation
is also a very important aspect of such interviews.
Be ready with a cross question to the most possible answer
from the interviewee. In order that you get the most
out of such interviews one can give answer options (a form
of bait) which could get the truth out of the interviewee.
However, avoid putting words into the mouth of such an individual.
These
kind of interviews are closer to interrogation and many a
time aggression helps. But remember you as a journalist
is not an enemy, and not out there to defame the individual.
One has to be very careful as this could backfire into a defamation
case.
One,
Two or Three Cam Shoots
Ideally
three Cameras should be used for a Face to Face interview.
One would be on the interviewee, another on the interviewer
and the third one on a Two shot. In such a situation
live vision mixing can be done to make the interview look
spontaneous and interesting. However, in the absence
of three Cameras, One or two Cameras can give similar results
after Post-Production. In case of Two cam shoots, one
camera each would be on the interviewer and the interviewee
and the output would be recorded on to two different tapes.
Later one of the Camera would be used to take two shots (
or Long Shots). Post-production helps in showing this
as a live mixed interview. In case, of one Camera shoot,
the interview is first conducted with the Camera facing the
interviewee. Later the interviewer records himself on
the Camera repeating the questions asked earlier in the real
interview. The same camera is used take two shots after
or before the interview. The Post-production once agains helps
in putting together the interview.
Camera
Framing
The
rules for framing the Camera that was mentioned in the interviews
for Stories segment also hold good here. Often in a
Face to Face interview along with Close up shots, Mid-shot
is also used. This helps in showing the hand actions
of the interviewee.
